Charles Gough Path

The Charles Gough Path is open.

The new permissive footpath from Highfield to Celleron now connects existing paths to form a circular walk around the Parish of Sockbridge and Tirril.

This is an improvement requested by 77% of people from the Parish who completed the Survey for the Community Led Plan (CLP) in October 2017.

The CLP Team took up the challenge and spoke with Lowther Estates, who very generously allowed us to create a footpath over their land where access had never been permitted before. After 14 months of planning and fund-raising, seven new, robust walkers’ gates have now been installed.

The new Parish Circular Path is dedicated to the nature-lover Charles Gough, who fell to his death on Helvellyn in 1805. His body was found three months later, with his faithful dog Foxie by his side, and is buried in Tirril’s Quaker graveyard.

We have produced a colourful Map and Guide to the new path. You can download the pdf from the link below, or from the 1st July you can obtain a copy from Chambers Garage.

Walking is a great tonic, so this new path will bring benefits to us all for health and well-being.

We shall work with the Woodland Trust to plant trees and hedges, to encourage wildlife and help combat global warming, and with Eden Rivers Trust to improve Lady Beck and reduce flooding by keeping water upstream.

We have walked with an ecologist along the route, to survey the area and record the plants and wildlife there. We’ll do two more surveys with him, then we’ll carry on recording the plants and wildlife in the future. We would measure the improvements which we hope to see there as nature flourishes.

We would like people from the parish to help with this work. If you would like to help with planting trees and hedges, or surveying plants and wildlife, please contact me on 07467 082 044 or

We are very grateful to all those who have contributed generously towards the £13,000 costs:

  • Cumbria Waste Management Environmental Trust (CWMET)
  • Friends of the Lake District (FLD)
  • The Woodland Trust
  • Eden Rivers Trust
  • T W Relph & Sons
