Sockbridge and Tirril Community
St Michael's Church
The Anglican church of St Michael, Barton, is just off the B5320 road towards Pooley Bridge, about one mile west of Tirril. It is a Grade 1 listed building which dates from the latter part of the 12th century and it is unusual in appearance in that its square tower rises from the middle of the building. The church is in the centre of a circular graveyard which includes twelve Grade II listed monuments and is still open for interments.
On three Sundays each month it offers morning services of Holy Communion of Morning Worship.
From April 2012 the following were in office: Vicar: Revd David Wood (486220), Churchwardens: Henry Pitt & Bill Pretswell; treasurer - John Pritchett; secretary, Grapevine distribution & electoral roll officer - Fiona Gravil; organist, choir & social matters - Kathleen Brown . Other PCC members - Beryl Pritchett, Eileen Pretswell, Eileen Cowey, Marion Brown, Doris Curry (also flowers). Duncan Sanders leads the team responsible for graveyard maintenance.
The parish of St Michael Church encompasses the villages of Yanwath, Tirll and Sockbridge and it is part of a benefice which also includes Pooley Bridge and Yanwath.
For more information on services, please see the Carlisle Diocese website and is also posted on the church and village noticeboards.
